“Poetry is the intellect colored by feelings”
-WILSON
An exclusive means to give way to one’s intellectual content blended with the colors of soft emotional touch has got to be a hard-to-find trend in the modern era where no one has time to steal a few moments out from a hectic schedule to spend in the lap of serenity, an escape from the hurry and worry, frustrations and a life running at a fast pace. It’s an unparalleled genre of literature that is appreciated & tasted by only a handful of readers.
Though modern poetry is so simple and lightweight that even a layman can get it, as I stated before that it’s a style enjoyed and liked by an intellectual class with a sentimental taste. It’s not something that can cater to and serve an enormous group. Let’s have a word about Ancient Vs. Modern poetry before I proceed further-
Suppose we cast a glance over the past. In that case, we see that ancient poetry was a bit complicated as it was restricted by the patterns and heavy rules of meter, length, rhyme scheme, and some specific set standards of word selection, so it was confined to the taste of a small sector of readers. In ancient poetry, the rhythm was a part & parcel feature and classical poets like Browning & Beowulf and others from the Victorian and Elizabethton Ages adopted the technique of iambic pentameter to enhance rhythm and also some add-ins to ornament it.
On the contrary, modern poets have omitted all these restrictions and transformed it into an easy peasy and light composition in the form of blank verse and many other styles.
Now let’s examine what is poetry, by the way.
In ancient times it was a medium of storytelling. It has also been described as a talking song in ancient literary language. It’s the art of expressing a thought emotionally with the right selection of words. In other words, poetry is the most effective, beautiful & impressive mode of saying things.
Here are two instances of poetic extracts that will supply a view of both ancient and modern poetry-
Movements, and the slow feet,
The trouble in the pace and the uncertain Wavering!
See, they return, one, and by one,
With fear as half-awakened;
As if the snow should hesitate
And murmur in the wind,
And half turn back;
These were the ‘Wing’-d-with-Awe,”
Inviolable. …………………….
